ARBEIA ROMAN FORT

The Roman Fort of Arbeia offers and insight into one of the most exciting periods of history. Visitors can walk around the excavated ruins of the Fort, see the reconstruction of the West Gate, visit the museum with its display of finds which include weapons, jewellery and coins then visitors can enter Time Quest to experience working on an a real archaeological dig.

THE CUSTOMS HOUSE

The recently renovated Mill Dam was once the heart of maritime activities. Now restored, the cobbled streets house an elegant Customs House with its cinema, theatre, gallery and stylish restaurant. A Maritime Festival is now a popular summer feature giving Mill Dam a unique character and ambience attracting both locals and visitors.

BEAUTIFUL BEACHES

With a wonderful coastline, graced by some of the best beaches in the region, South Shields offers a unique blend of natural splendour with all the ingredients of a traditional seaside resort. Littlehaven beach offers excellent water sport opportunities, whist the golden stretch of Sandhaven, with its backdrop of dunes, is especially popular. Deck chairs, tents and windbreaks are available for hire and lifeguards patrol during the summer season.

OCEAN BEACH PLEASURE PARK

No visit to the seaside is complete without a trip to the funfair, laughter and thrills are in plentiful supply at Ocean Beach Pleasure Park with rides and amusements for all ages. There is an exciting choice of the latest fairground rides, including the "white knuckle" variety as well as more traditional roundabouts and kiddies rides.

COOKSON COUNTRY FESTIVAL

South Tyneside's summer festival promises six weeks of FREE family fun and entertainment. South Shields seafront plays host to a galaxy of big name stars and there is something for everyone, with live music, brass bands, clowns, old time music hall, street theatre, children's parties and family fun days.

SOUTH SHIELDS MUSEUM

Find out about one of Britain's best loved authors in the "Catherine Cookson" gallery with its realistic reconstruction of the author's home, its kitchen and Cissie Affleck's shop. The local history gallery contains a fascinating collection of material showing the influence of Land, River and Sea on the history of South Tyneside.

BLUEREEF AQUARIUM

Using the ferry service between North and South Shields (5 mins from guest house) you open up another frontier of interesting places to visit. The Bluereef Aquarium is something very special and is the home to some of the worlds most exotict and exciting creatures of the oceans....
